Horden Beach

I really like the beach at Horden. I have some pretty old photos from the era when it had the reputation as being one of the most polluted beaches in Western Europe - but time has moved on, the pollution from the colliery has ended and nature seems to be recovering the beach.

The "slag" from the colliery was routinely tipped out to sea every days for decades. It left layers of debris on the beach - but at the high tide mark its now possible to see where the sea is genuinely recovering its former glory.

The rust coloured water and stained rocks on the beach are down to the high iron levels in the area.
