Pointe Du Hoc
Pointe Du Hoc. At the top of very steep cliffs between Omaha and Utah Beaches, this German strongpoint was thought to house a battery of German guns.
The American Rangers scaled the cliffs against all the odds and took the site. The area had been heavily bombed beforehand to weaken the German resolve.
When the area was successfully taken, at great loss to the Rangers, they discovered that the actual heavy artillery that had been positioned there had previously been moved inland, though the site itself was strategically very important to the Allies.
With the craters from the bombing still very evident and the damage to the gun housing very obvious, this area has been left much as it was found during this time.
