Port En Bessen

We stayed in this area during our first visit. A lovely quaint port, where Lock Gates are used to keep the height of water in the port area of the town. At low tide (as photographed here) the gates are very evident - and the structure of the engineering system is very clear too,

When taken by the Allied troops, apparently this area was used to bring ashore fuel for the advancing army - a kind of huge petrol station!

Used in the film "The Longest Day" as Ouistreham, this quiet port is a very pleasing visit.
