Sunderland

Back in the day - a visit to Roker Park involved a drive over the bridges down to the sea front and park up in the coach park. With an hour and a half to fill before the match - an occasional wander down the river was to take on the industrial sight of the shipyards.

Now long gone with the area a more picturesque setting for Sunderland University - there's a sadness about the departed shipyards - but its a pretty pleasant walk these days.

The "Nil Desperandum" at the centre of Monkwearmouth bridge is a worthy reminder to be positive - in combination with the Samaritan's sign guiding the truly desperate to get some much needed help. Nevertheless, without getting into the very real problems that some people face the suggestion of "Nil Desperandum" always makes me smile in that it clearly was never written with the 40,000 or so crowd in mind who have just been through the occasional genuine torment of a match at the Stadium of Light within easy view of the bridge!
