Vierville Omaha Beach

Just a short way along from the "Les Brave" sculpture (please see separate set) this site of Omaha Beach.

At this position following the successful landings, the Omaha Beach version of the Mulberry Harbour was built and the photos show the very small remnant of that.

The two Mulberry Harbours (see also Arromanche set) were badly damaged by very heavy "freak" storms later in June 1944 - so much so that parts from the Omaha version had to be used to "cannibalise" the repair of the Arromanche version in order to keep the supplies rolling.

Also at this area a large US memorial to the fallen troops. This was built over the large calibre gun emplacement that was reputed to be responsible for a huge amount of the damage to landing troops on D Day.

Up in the cliffs from this area a "foxhole" where a large calibre gun would have had clear site of the entire stretch of Omaha Beach.
